MGNREGA is a statutory programme run by the Ministry of Rural Development, launched in 2006.
The detail
| Ministry | Rural Development |
|---|---|
| Launched | 2006 |
| Type | statutory programme |
| Statutory basis | VB-G RAM G Act, 2025, replaced the MGNREG Act, 2005 with effect from 1 July 2026 |
| Funding | Under the successor VB-G RAM G Act: centrally sponsored at 60:40 Centre:State; 90:10 for NE and Himalayan states (MGNREGA's old pattern was 100% Centre for unskilled wages) |
| Aim | The rural employment guarantee: replaced from 1 July 2026 by the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin), which raises the guarantee to 125 days per rural household per year |
Commonly confused: MGNREGA ceased on 1 July 2026. The operative law is the VB-G RAM G Act, 2025: 125 days (up from 100), shared 60:40 funding (was Centre-paid wages). Still a legal entitlement, not a discretionary scheme; ministry unchanged.
